A study by JAMA Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery studied patients who took medication to reduce gastric acid and also followed a Mediterranean diet. The study focused on a more serious version of the heartburn known as the laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR).
This is a condition when the stomach acids come back into the throat. This doesn't give you heartburn. Symptoms are a chronic sore throat, coughing all the time or even the feeling of a lump in the throat.
Over 180 patients were observed, and it was found that the participant patients with more plant-based diet had fewer reflux symptoms.
The dietary approach to preventing heartburn or acid reflux is beneficial for many reasons. This is great news considering how less medication for every small uncomfortable feeling is better for you.
